We hope you had a wonderful holiday. In the spirit of giving thanks, we’re grateful for the power and generosity of our bold and brave community. That’s why we’re joining the global #GivingTuesday campaign to celebrate giving back through social media, philanthropy, and collaboration.
Thanks to YOU we:
- Launched our report on gendered harassment on Twitter. Since we launched our pilot and report, we’ve seen Twitter implement some of our recommendations including broadening their definition of a threat (so abusers can’t game the system), publicly committing to building a more diverse workforce, and allowing users to share block lists to prevent abuse. What’s more, Twitter mentioned the value of our feedback at Good Pitch 2015.
- Helped ignite a global conversation about online harassment, resulting in a domino effect across the interwebs. Google banned “revenge porn” and met with WAM! and our coalition partners about ending online abuse. Reddit shut down five of its most heinous subreddits (a strong case for sustained women’s leadership in the tech world!), and New Zealand passed a law making online abuse illegal.
- Expanded our chapters to new cities including Montreal, the Bay Area, Toronto, and Seattle. Our 9 chapters in the US and Canada provided local mentoring events, book clubs, conferences, pitch sessions, a feminist film festival, and screenings of groundbreaking films including The Hunting Ground and She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry.
- Penned op-eds for Mic, CNN, and The New York Times about gender representation at the Emmy Awards, feminism and the election, and cultural appropriation.
These are just a few reasons why we’re grateful to partner with you. Our people-powered movement is fueled by your commitment to our mission, and your contributions to our cause.
We invite you to continue to support us by tweeting about why you WAM! using the #GivingTuesday hashtag, and/or by donating to help grow the movement for gender justice in media.
